Do penis enlargement pills work?

Short answer: no. Here’s why, the real risk hiding in some “male enhancement” pills, and what a supplement can honestly do for you.

Key facts

  • No pill, supplement or cream has been shown to make a penis bigger.1
  • Some “male enhancement” products have been caught containing hidden prescription drugs, like the active ingredients in Viagra and Cialis.2
  • Of 776 tainted supplements the FDA flagged between 2007 and 2016, 45% were sold for sexual enhancement.3
  • A supplement can support things like desire and energy. It can’t change size.

The short answer

The International Society for Sexual Medicine lists pills, supplements and creams alongside pumps, weights, stretching and “jelqing”, and is blunt about all of them: “There is no scientific evidence that supports the use of any of nonsurgical method” to increase length or girth.1

No pill has been shown to grow penile tissue in an adult. Any product that promises inches is selling a promise no study backs up.

Why some “male enhancement” pills are risky

The bigger problem isn’t pills that do nothing. It’s pills that secretly contain real drugs. The FDA has repeatedly found “natural” sexual enhancement products laced with undeclared sildenafil and tadalafil, the active ingredients in Viagra and Cialis.2 A study of FDA warnings from 2007 to 2016 found 776 tainted supplements; 353 of them were sold for sexual enhancement, and nearly half of those contained hidden sildenafil.3

That matters because these drugs can interact with nitrate heart medicines and, in the FDA’s words, “may lower blood pressure to dangerous levels”.2 If you don’t know a pill contains them, you can’t know to avoid that mix.

Red flags

What a supplement can (and can’t) do

Herbs like horny goat weed, maca, tribulus and panax ginseng have long traditions of use for libido and energy, and that’s the honest lane for a men’s supplement: supporting desire, energy and stamina. Research on them is mostly small, and people respond differently, so expectations matter.

If what you’re dealing with is trouble getting or keeping an erection, that’s a medical question, and a good one to take to a doctor: proven prescription treatments exist, and the cause is sometimes worth catching early. More on erection health.
